What is a custom CD?
A custom CD is a made-to-order compact disc containing songs you've selected from a music collection. After you've selected songs from a Custom Shop collection and submitted your order, CDNOW uses patented technology to record your selections on a disc. The process is fully automated and your custom CD will have the same sound quality as a standard CD.
How do I create and order a custom CD?
It's easy. Visit CDNOW's Custom Shop and browse the songs available for your custom CD. Select songs you want to include on your CD. Using the "Edit" function, you can add or delete songs and change the sequence of your selections. You can also add finishing touches to your CD, like a customized title. When you're happy with your custom CD, just add it to your shopping cart.
Why can't I choose from today's hit songs (the ones I hear on the radio)?
Before we can offer music for custom CDs, we must license each song from the copyright owners (artists, publishers and record labels). Hit songs are most difficult to license. We do not produce custom CDs based on individual requests for songs that are not listed in a Custom Shop music collection.
We will soon be introducing a variety of music collections in the Custom Shop, featuring selected artists, music genres (e.g., jazz, rock or classical) or special themes (e.g., holiday music, beach music or 70's music). Visit the Custom Shop often to see the latest collections.
Does CDNOW 's Custom Shop make custom cassettes, mini-discs, or DVDs?
At this time, we specialize in custom CDs. We do not customize cassettes, mini-discs, or DVDs.
How many songs can I include on a custom CD?
You can fit a lot of music on a custom CD (up to 70 minutes). However, to keep the price of custom CDs comparable to that of standard CDs, the Custom Shop limits the number of songs or minutes per custom CD.
Can I select songs from more than one category?
Within any one Custom Shop music collection, you can mix and match all you want. For example, your custom CD might include songs from the Favorites, Songs by Title and Songs by Artist categories. You can also mix and match CDNOW Picks from one or more categories within a music collection.
Why can't custom CDs be shipped to non-U.S. destinations?
Due to licensing restrictions, custom CDs are currently available for shipment to U.S. addresses only. In the future, custom CDs will be made available for shipping to non-U.S. addresses.
Will my custom CD be shipped with the other items in my order?
All custom CDs are shipped from shipping center "C" (as shown in your shopping cart). This is a separate shipping center for custom CDs only. If custom CDs are combined in an order with any of our other product lines (including domestic or import music titles or movies), they are subject to our multiple shipment surcharge. The surcharge does not apply if your order contains only custom CDs.
Will my custom CD be shrink-wrapped?
Because we manufacture your custom CDs on-demand right here at CDNOW and ship them directly to you, we do not shrink-wrap custom CDs. We guarantee that unwrapped custom CDs are new items, and have not been used or re-sold.
How are custom CDs different than standard CDs?
Custom CDs work just like standard CDs, but are made using different materials and a different manufacturing process. Unlike standard CDs that are pressed from a mold, custom CDs are burned with a laser on CD-Recordable media.
CD-Recordable ("CDR") media comes in a variety of colors (gold, silver, green or blue). Like standard CD media, CDRs cannot be re-recorded. CDRs can be played in most standard CD players. Testing has shown, however, that some older CD players are not able to read CDR media. CDRs may be more susceptible to physical damage than standard CDs, and less tolerant of extreme temperatures and sunlight.
